About JHP

JHP began in 1988 as a pilot project at the Federal City Shelter in Washington, D.C. Volunteers were paired with fifteen shelter residents to help them find work and to address the problems that were keeping them from working. The volunteers discovered that personalized, mutually accountable employment and job search services based in the shelter worked well, resulting in employment for twelve of the fifteen individuals.

On the basis of that successful pilot, JHP applied for and was awarded funding from the Department of Labor under the Job Training for the Homeless Demonstration Program. That grant, combined with private contributions, enabled us to hire our first professional staff and open employment programs at two shelter locations: Federal City Shelter and Trust Clinic Shelter (which is now closed).

Today, JHP’s day-programs provide services in five homeless and/or domestic violence shelters in Washington DC and Prince Georges County. And operates two shelters where we provide 24/7 supervision, meals, and wrap-a-round services.

JHP has been featured on the TouchDC website, in the Community Foundation’s Spirit of Giving Guide, in the Catalog of Philanthropy and in a video on homeless veterans produced by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. Because of our excellent track record finding employment and housing for the homeless, JHP was recently selected as one of three non-profits in the nation whose methodology will be studied by an independent agency (hired by the Department of Labor and HUD) in order to create a guide book and materials to assist non-profits nationwide help the homeless on their journey to employment and self-sufficiency.
